What an apostille actually is

An apostille (pronounced ah-pos-TEE) is a certificate issued by a government authority that authenticates the origin of a public document. It confirms that the signatures, seals, and stamps on your document are legitimate and issued by an authorized official.

The apostille itself doesn't validate the content of the document — it validates the document's authenticity. It tells the receiving country: this birth certificate really was issued by the State of Florida. This diploma really was certified by the University of Texas.

The apostille system was created by the Hague Convention of 1961. Countries that signed the Convention agree to recognize each other's apostilles, which means a document apostilled in the U.S. will be accepted in any other Hague Convention country without further authentication.

Important: Not every country is a Hague Convention member. If your destination is not a member, apostille alone may not be sufficient — you may need a different authentication process called "legalization" or "embassy legalization." Verify your destination country's requirements with your immigration attorney.
